Sarah Sun Kanell
BYUSA President
Hello! I'm Sarah Sun Kanell, a Strategic Management major and huge fan of all things BYU! I'm a proud Utahn: from Cache to Kane, to Uintah to Juab, I've been to nearly every county in state during my year of service as Miss Utah 2023 and split my childhood between Cedar City and Salt Lake City (with an interlude in Montreal, Canada). At 17, I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and later served a mission at the Mormon Battalion Historic Site and in Riverside, California speaking Mandarin Chinese. With 20 years of training in classical music, I have learned to play 11 instruments and possess a deep appreciation for the arts. I've taught music at the Utah State Correctional Facility and have toured the world as a piano soloist and with the BYU Young Ambassadors. At the heart of all I do is a deep love for people. Tala Alnasser
BYUSA Executive Vice President
Salam! I am Tala Alnasser, and I am an Arab-Muslim student from Jordan and Palestine. I am studying Public Relations and French with a minor in Sociology, and I hope to pursue a Juris Doctor in international law. My commitment to bridge building is deeply ingrained in my heritage and upbringing. I grew up moving more than six different times and have gained a profound appreciation for creating spaces of proximity as it is a powerful tool for fostering belonging. It is for that reason that I ran on this platform. This year I hope to instill in every student I meet an internal feeling of gratitude for every blessing they’ve been given and confidence in their ability to reach their potential and become a better version of themselves. I showcase my love for learning through traveling, cooking, and playing chess as I believe any hobby can be a universal language and thus surpasses language divides and other socially constructed barriers. Our mission is to create a campus community focused on three pillars: becoming unified, becoming bridge-builders, and becoming more. By actively cultivating the BYU student experience, we can all reach these ideals as individuals and as a university community.
